A completed application packet will include the following:

• A completed online application
• Non-refundable application fee of $50.00 made payable to Kentucky State University in the form of money order
• Verification of graduation from high school or secondary institution.
• A transcript of official high school/secondary school credits verifying graduation (with English translation)
• All post-secondary school transcripts (if applicable) with English translation.
• All post-secondary transcripts must be submitted to for a course-by-course evaluation to determine college credit equivalency. We recommend WES (World Education Services) International Credential Evaluation www.wes.org 
• For exchange transfer students: Registrar’s Office will articulate transcript based on MOU and determine admit decision of student
• A copy of your passport
• An official statement from a sponsor or bank documenting financial support and/or deposit equivalent to $20,782.00 US Dollars. If dependents accompanying, additional funding of $7,500 for spouse and $4,500 for each child is needed.
• Test scores for your college entry exam, such as ACT/SAT/TOEFL/IELTS/GRE. For undergraduate student admission, ACT, SAT, TOEFL, or IELTS
• Nigerian students must submit WASC

 

All international J-1 students must meet the university admission requirements. The Admission Office, together with the Office of Global Strategies and International Affairs (OGSIA), carefully reviews each application. The decision criteria include the following:

1. English Language Proficiency
   
   Note: English language training is not part of this J-1 program. Students must possess a proficiency in the English language in order to function in the academic program, and to navigate daily life in the U.S., if English is not the student’s native or official language in his/her home country. Exemptions may be made to those who have earned a US bachelor’s or above degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association in the United States, or the international equivalent degree from a university of recognized standing in a country in which all instruction is delivered in English.
   
   KSU accept the following minimum test scores:

• • IELTS: 0
  • TOEFL CBT (Computer Based Test) 194
  • TOEFL IBT (Internet Based Test) 70
  • TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test) 525

2. Minimum Entry Score:
   • ACT Composite: 18
   • SAT Total Score: 960
     
     
3. Minimum GPA: 2.0
   
   
4. For MOU exchange students: participation in an Exchange/Cooperative MOU between KSU and the student’s home institution. The student must submit recommendation from their home university. Must be engaged in a full-timeprescribed course of study in a non-degree academic program with a specific educational objective. May include classroom instruction, research projects, and/ or academic training.
   
   
5. Have sufficient funding for themselves and any J-2 dependents for the entire duration of the program. J-1 students must provide official evidence of sufficient funding to demonstrate that they have the ability to cover their tuition and living expenses. International student tuition fee applies. The estimated cost is $20,782/academic year. Additional funding of $7,500 for spouse and $4,500 for each child is needed if they would like to bring their dependents with them.
   
   
   1. This includes tuition, housing, and other living expenses.
   2. KSU faculty may choose to act as a sponsor for the duration of a student’s program at KSU. Funding for faculty-sponsored students must have a substantial amount (50% or more) come from non-personal funds, such as a home institution, employer, government grant, KSU scholarship, or fellowship.
   3. J-1 Visiting Students can only use personal or family funds for less than 50% of the required minimum funding. This means that more than 50% of the required funding needs to come from Kentucky State University, their home institution, or another funding source. This more than 50% rule may be waived for direct exchange students with an MOU from foreign university.
      
      
6. Be engaged in a full-time course of study, including classroom instruction and/or research, unless otherwise specified through a relevant exchange agreement.

Once a J-1 student is successfully admitted, OIA will process and issue the J-1 student’s DS-2019 together with a welcome package including check-in and orientation instructions. Check-In and orientation are mandatory procedures within the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program per the U.S. Department of State.
