Substance Abuse Prevention
Kentucky State University’s Center for Emotional Wellness understands the need for substance abuse prevention in the University setting. Our Substance Abuse, Drugs and Alcohol Prevention Program addresses the substance use and abuse through education, prevention and compassionate intervention and treatment. Increasing awareness of healthy lifestyle choices as an alternative to alcohol or drug use helps our community form positive behaviors, both on- and off-campus.
Substance Abuse, Drugs and Alcohol Prevention
Addressing substance abuse through compassionate, empathetic interventions allows us to develop trusting relationships with community members at all levels. Because Kentucky State University is a small institution, assessment and intervention can begin immediately after a problem is identified. We strive to meet the needs of clients at all three prevention levels:
- Primary Prevention: before substance use or abuse has ever occurred
- Secondary Prevention: when substance use is primarily experimental and neither dependency or addiction are factors
- Tertiary Prevention: treatment for dependency or addiction, encouraging changes in attitude and lifestyle
